I'm looking to upgrade and have been looking at both of these. Which one would you recommend?

My money is on the D5100, been using it since July, and about 5000 shots later, I'm still loving it.
Just a couple of recent spur of the moment shots. The building
was taken through the windshield at 35mph and single handed.
I wasn't expecting the heron at all.

It depends on how much you want to spend. They both do about the same thing. I have a D3100 and really like it. Although as MT said the D5100 has a bit better sensor and is a 16MP wher as the 3100 is a 14MP. Personally at that size, I don't think it makes much difference unless you are blowing up pictures to more than 20X30. The D5100 does have a tilt screen also.
You can also use the extra money to get youself a nice zoom. Say a 55-200VR or my favorite the 55-300VR. Don't forget extra batteries.
Good Luck and Happy New Year.

I agree with the others, the D5100 is probably the best buy for the $. I got my oldest daughter one for her B-Day (and Xmas) and it is an amazing camera. I have a D7000 and for general picture taking the D5100 is probably a better camera. Same or similar 16MP advanced Sony CMOS sensor as the D7000. The D7000 does not have the movable view screen, the D5100 does....big advantage in my book. IMO get the best body you can afford, and stay with to learn. Chances are your lens purchases will outpace your body investment in a short time, so go with the D5100.

Here is a website that might help. I have the D3100 a very small camera and I love it, but it depends on what you are looking for and remember visit your camera store and actually hold the camera before making a decision.
Good Luck

I concur. I went through a similar transition. Started with the 3100, then the 5100 a month later and now the 7000. I traded the 3100 when I bought the 5100 and have loved its performance. I just treated myself to the D7000 last week along with a couple of new lenses but I kept 5100, at least for now, particularly since I anticipate making use of the variable angle screen for movie making.

I have D3100. Just found out there is not a wireless cable release for the D3100 at this time. When I asked Nikon if one was coming I got an answer box that would not open up. And I believe there are some lens that you can use with most Nikons except the D3100. Other than that it it a great camera.

The D5100 is better overall than the D3100, but $300 better I'm not sure. A tiltable moveable screen isn't that important to me as I don't really do video.(may try someday)
I have the D3100(my first DSLR) also, and for the money difference, I didn't upgrade to the D5100. And yes for that difference in price, I got the 55-300 VR lens. But I will upgrade for the D7100 when and if it ever gets released. Now that I know more about whats available out there.
