How to Paint with your Camera

Hello,
I have seen quite a few pictures as of late using the painting technique and am curious as to how to achieve this effect. I am not referring to painting with light using an external light source such as a flashlight. I am referring to how to achieve the effect of an abstract work of art using zoom or panning. I have checked youtube and other internet sources and cannot seem to find an actual tutorial. Anyone know how to do this?

Hi thanks for your quick response but that is not what I am looking for. Here is a link to some photos that someone posted on the internet but she doesn't discuss the technique.

went to the site - your right - no information - probably because the author does not know what they are doing either....at least from the images posted on the site - and no, you cannot obtain this unique effect using software.......

I have done some of the examples you linked to. Usually I set my camera for a slower speed and when I fully depress the shutter button I move the camera purposely to get the effect.

Thank you all for your help... from what I have been able to piece together I think I have a pretty good idea of what it is I need to do. Funny how there isn't much information on the internet regarding this topic.

Maybe as this type of photo are consider to be accidents and/or just playing around. I.E. camera toss is another example.

Actually, there are several photographers I know who do this sort of thing on purpose and while it's true one cannot predict what the image will look like - there is nothing "accidental" about the practice.

That said, there are several excellent photographers who use this technique on a regular basis - creating stunning images. It's more than simply moving the camera with a slow shutter speed, and it's not like "camera toss." There is a certain way of seeing that is important and comes with practice (like everything else). A hint - try seeing the space instead of the subject or put differently, try seeing the space as the subject.

Yes I agree that there are several photographers that do this on purpose and I know it takes a lot of practice to end up with something that is abstract and pleasing to the eye.... I have seen attempts, to me, that just look like a result of camera shake.
