Thank you, I haven't seen anything like that since I ventured out on a frozen Lake Erie as a kid. I had forgotten about the ice volcanoes. Glad someone captured it on film, and did so very well I might add.

Thanks Brad. Last year I got some shots of water shooting up through the volcanoes. This year they are all "dormant" now, unless you walk out to the middle of the lake, I suppose, near open water.

Beautiful but it's just hard to imagine the Great Lakes freezing like this.

Thanks.

Consistently cold temperatures and a lot of wind and wave action have caused some interesting ice formations this year.

Oh my...just finished editing my photos from my walk today out there....great stuff. Thanks again for the tips to get out there. I did end up hiking 2 miles before reaching the ice, due to the number of cars and people, but it was so worth it.

Very good! Lots of sun today. If you post your photos let me know where (or feel free to post any on this thread).

I think I will go back out Tuesday or Wednesday.

We are seeing ice on Lake Michigan like we haven't seen in decades. Latest estimate is that the lake is frozen over 80% now.

Tuesday we had sun for the first time in weeks, so we strapped on ice cleats - absolutely necessary as the footing was treacherous - and headed out. The temperature got up to only 4 degrees F, but there wasn't any wind so we stayed out about 4 hours.

A few hundred yards out we climbed 30 or 40 feet up to the edge of an ice cliff - a sheer drop 40-50 feet. From there we could see huge pile-ups of broken ice sections, each fragment probably 10-25 feet across.

There were lots of "ice volcanoes" which are caused by wave pressure blowing holes in the ice. Water then shoots up through these holes like a geyser, and as it comes down it freezes and forms conical "mountains." Some were 10-15 tall.

Wow Mike, these shots look like something out of Antarctica, let alone Lake MichiganÂ….Beautiful.

Thanks. Well at least we haven't seen 20 or 30 below this year.
