American grave in Edinburgh

While I was out walking yesterday I came across a grave in the Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh, the reason I noticed it was that it had flags on it and seems to be looked after. I know very little about American history but the man named was from Edinburgh so I thought some of you might like to know about it.

Col. Robert A. Smith of the 10th Mississippi Regiment Confederate States Army.
A Native of Edinburgh.
Who fell mortally wounded at the battle of Mumfordsville Kentucky September 14th 1862.
While gallantly leading in the charge of Fort Craig aged 26 years. [there is then a flag]
Sponsored by Murfreesboro S.C.V. Camp No 33 Tennessee.

How interesting...I live near Murfreesboro (the city cited on his marker). I can tell you that the flags on the left and right have Confederate U.S. battle markings. I have also traveled through Mumfordsville Kentucky but was not aware of this battle. Next time I'm in that area, I'll have to see what I can find out about this battle. Thanks for sharing...was very interesting for me.

How interesting...apparently Col. Smith was an important figure of this battle. There is a monument at Munfordville Kentucky near the location of the battlefield erected in his honor. The article also says that Col. Smith is buried at Jackson Mississippi.
You can read more about him here:

Well now I badly want to go photograph his memorial in Kentucky. And so...I started researching. It appears this memorial is out in a field. I viewed satellite images to plan my route in. It's along some railroad tracks several yards south of the bridge crossing he defended during the battle. Sadly there are no roads leading to the spot. I think my best bet is to stop in the little town of Munfordville and ask the local folks how I can get access to the memorial to photograph it. Probably can't make the trip till better weather. It's about 104 miles (167km) northeast of Nashville. But I've had fun learning about all this. So glad you posted.
