If you could have only one lens for your camera for general photography, which would it be? It would not necessarily be the lens that came with the camera.

I use an 18-270 Tamron. They just released a 16-300. I would wait to see the reviews.

I just bought a 50-200 zoom, great for general photography and better than the kit lens that came with my Nikon

Almost never off one of my bodies, best grab-and-go choice out there.

I'm also a member of the 28-300 fan club. Perfect for all my walk around photography.

So the best lens is a zoom of good quality appropriate to your shooting style. Long zoom add $$$ to the price. If you do not shoot distant subject you do not need the reach. Same goes for wide angle.
