January 27 was an extremely cold day in southcentral PA, but on a pre-Thanksgiving birding trip along coastal Delaware to Chincoteague, VA, I was smitten by the Redhead "fever". It so happened that a post on PABIRDS on the 26th mentioned a pond about 20 miles away that had a good flock of Reds. On the 27th I couldn't wait any longer, regardless of the temp and wind chill, to see these creatures in a pond with only a small open water section.
The attached pix are a small sample of a 9-minute photo shoot. At that point I could no longer feel my fingertips since I only shoot with fingertip-less gloves in winter.
In addition to the 26 male redheads and some females, there were 3 domestic mallards mixed in with other mallards and a coot.
Very nice   8-)
what a beautiful gathering of color! and variety of ducks.
Love the last shot! Reminds me of a photographer taking a class picture, with everyone facing forward except the class clown, who tries to moon the shot!
evenic, Fergus, and sford122... thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts about the ducks. Concerning the last three pix: As I sat in the car trying to thaw out, these ducks stayed in a series of tight groups. I called my wife to tell her I was watching several "colorful gardens" full of ducks. It wasn't until she saw these pix for herself did she realize what I meant.

I just saw a PABIRDS comment that this mix of ducks was seen today. With some bone-chilling nights expected early next week, I may get another chance to see these ducks up close and personal.
Hang the weather! These shots are worth it.

BT, weather-wise, I totally agree with you to a point, but as Kenny Rogers sang: "You got to know when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em"...
I do appreciate your thoughts about these pix.
