I've been working on getting a wedding ring shot sharp for my nieces wedding. This is tougher than I thought. How is this for sharpness? I have blown out highlights in the stone. How could I avoid that?
I would try a diffused flash and a larger aperture. Angle the flash at 45 to 90 degrees to the subject to help reduce glare. Your going to have to play with the distance from the subject. Open the aperture to f16 or f14, this should help sharpen up the image. If you are hand holding the shot increase the shutter speed to at least 1/100 of a second. If illumination allows it, increase shutter speed up to 1/200, may require opening aperture to f13/f11.
One quick suggestion: blow the ring as clean as possible to remove dust, which can look like gravel in a macro-photograph.
I concur with William's suggestion of diffused lighting, as I find your photo above a bit dark. A large (6x8-in) diffused light source will defeat specular reflections, and brighten the metal.
Agree with William on the diffusion. I would try to include some of the rest of the ring... that part doesn't necessarily have to be within the limited DOF.
I'm trying again. Will post tonight. Thank you.
PS: I scrubbed the ring, but it's old and scratched. I'm just using it for practice until I can do my nieces ring.

Will she be wearing it? If so, you can scratch my suggestion.

I'm going to do it both ways. Some with just the rings, and some on their hands.
