Matte Size for 19 x 13 print

I am printing on 19 x 13 paper. What standard matte size should I buy and how big should the image area be. I would like to leave say a 1/2 inch border inside the inner edge of the mat.

With that large of a print, you might want a wider mat border depending on your style of frame (if you're framing). Just my opinion.

I'm not framing at the moment. I'm taking a class & and just want to bring to class in a mat.

If you mat with a 12x18 opening and a 3" overall matting you can use an 18x24 frame which is a standard size.

Whatever size you want. I would go between 2 1/2 and 3 in.

I'd go to a frame shop and try some corner samples to get an idea. They should be willing to help.

Use the 13x19 mat size and mount in a 16x24 frame, it will look very nice. I usually have my mats for these custom cut at 1 5/8" wide on top and both sides, leaving the bottom extra high for signing or labeling. 18x24 frames are available also for a uniform width mat cut.

If you need help with this, more likely than not you'll have other questions pertaining to matting, mounting, framing...this might be worth the $25.00. I do custom matting and found the following link to be one of the best...although there are plenty of free ones on You Tube.

In our area we have a large craft shop, Michael's. I believe it's a chain. They have a large frame and matte section. About anything you could ask for and the staff is quite knowledgable and helpful. As I recall they also have matte sheets for making custom sized mattes. Prices are quite reasonable. perhaps you have something similar in your area.

Also, check you local newspaper, or Michaels website for coupons. They usually offer between 40% & 50% and sometimes a discount on top of that.

Remember to keep aspect ratio of your image when you print it the same as the file from your camera. When you are ready to mat the image your mat window should be 1/2 inch smaller than your image. Hinge the photograph off the back with acidfree tape. Use acidfree foamcore as your mounting material.Call around for your best price on matting.DO NOT LET ANYONE SHRINKWRAP YOUR ART. Hope this helps.WM
