digiscoping

I'm beginning to research spotting scopes on which to place a camera. Since I'm on a fixed income, am looking at the lowest price, decent quality scope. I do a lot of birding (my longest lens is 400mm), and it would be a terrific benefit to be able to see the moon in all its phases. Does anyone have any suggestions, warnings, etc?

If I had a 400mm lens, I would consider a telephoto converter. A good one, from Nikon, Canon etc., though pricey will cost far less than a good digiscoping setup. I tried some digi with a 60mm ED triplet 5.9 focal length scope, using the afocal method. Some shots were good, some not. Also tried DSLR through same scope. Point is, it's a hassle and expensive. You mentioned your pockets are not so deep, and good digi equipment is big bucks.
Being on the Vineyard, maybe make inquiries locally and find whose digiscoping for a better understanding about all this.
Hope this helps and good luck...
Dennis

Have you considered some of the mega zoom bridge cameras? The Canon Sx50 HS is very good and shoot at 24-1200mm optically, and it is supposed to have a replacement soon.

  Check out the Moon shots from the SX50 and other cameras by doing a "Search" for "Moon" at the top of the page.
