saw these while in Tennessee and was fascinated. they are an evergreen and were seen in several places. any idea what they are or reason for the strange growth pattern?
They probably were cut once, rather high up, but stumps not cleared. I have noticed this same growth pattern on pines whose top was broken off in storms, one branch, usually the one that gets the most sun, twists around and becomes a new tree top.
Yes they were cut high leaving bottom limbs. The limbs will turn up and continue to grow making a multiple stemmed tree. RGS
