I remember getting off of the train in La Plaza de Santa Fe.
The train pulled in just at dawn.
Santa Fe was so different then. There were so few paved roads. Santa Fe to Denver was the only paved road that I remember, of course I never got to ABQ till I was grown.
The conductor would let me stand with him as we passed camel
rock. The red sun would boil over the Sangre de Cristos and bathe the valley in red rose light - hence Sangre de Cristo.
The train would pull into la Plaza which was unpaved. The Indians were unrolling their balnkets and laying out their wares. Everything was adobe then. Our family friend Isabell
would pull up in her convertible and off we'd go.
We'd go here for Maria's black pottery. Stop in this puebla
where they made the best masa. Stop there "they have the best water". To Espanola for "the best chiles". And then on to TA. where the ranch headquarters were. It was a large territorial style home. Well water [that's why we filled those jugs earler]. Playing in the barns hay loft.
Fishing with my Dad on the Brazos.
Sometimes we'd drive down from Denver. 285 was another dirt road. Split off at Antonito and drive up the Conejos. Then over Cumbres pass and down into Chama.
Enchantment pure enchantment.
