I am about to embark on a month long exploration of England and Scotland. While there are places that I have decided I must see, I'm looking for suggestions of out of the way, photography, must see places that I have not heard about. I know there are a lot of Scots, and English talented people on this site so I am asking them for ideas. Thanks.

There are all the obvious places like Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral which isn't far away. The jurassic coast from Lyme Bay round to the Isle of Whight is worth a look. A lot will depend on what takes your interest as you can have the modern along side the 2000 year old burial site.

Actually, I am not as interested in the "obvious" places, as I am in the unknown places. I have not heard of the Jurassic coast so that peaks my interests. I've been thinking a lot about working the Isle of Whight in to the trip. I'm very curious about it. Thank you for the suggestion.

Some great stuff in Scotland depending on the time of year you can get midges in various areas, the lake district is a must,Whitby is a very interesting place and Robin Hood bay has some interesting buildings, the Peak district is worth a visit,Snowdonia has some amazing sites very austere with superb rocks etc.
The south is busier than the north (traffic wise) Cornwall has some enchanting country side and coastal walks.
We use to visit Scotland quite a lot ,if the weather is bad it can be awfull, but when it clears brilliant.
Have a great time, and good luck with the weather.
Dave

Obviously there is a huge choice of hidden away locations, but might I also suggest the Isle of Skye. It has mountains, rugged, many just over 1000 metres, with attendant seascapes. It is of a size whereby you could do North, South, East and West shots from each coast and spend little time travelling in between. Weatherwise, you could be arriving just as the sunny days begin to show, rather than increase. But otherwise, have a good time and keep in touch with all the tourist info offices who will be keen to help, especially if the request is different.

Hi Linda, I don't know how you are travelling around but if you are going to Scotland you have to go via The Lake District for a couple of days. If you look at a UK map it's situated in the NW of England south of Carlisle. If you are travelling by car always allow plenty of time as the traffic can be awful. As a rule of thumb the farther north you go the better it gets, the traffic that is. If you have been to London before don't bother to go back.
Have a good trip,
John.

Hey Craggy,
Thanks for these links, although I've been to England and Scotland before there is a lot to see.
I will be taking part of my family later this summer (mid September) for a vacation, and these links will be some helpful suggestions.

Just do be like the tourist who asked the guide: "Why did they build the castle so close to the railroad tracks?" :)

Glad you feel they will assist. Don't be afraid to ask questions of us Brits - we love helping foreigners find what we've got - and that's a helluva lot more than just our capital cities !

Hi, I am writing to you from the Isle of Wight (correct spelling too!) and would say that the place is well worth a detour. There are historic attractions, for example Queen Victoria had a summer 'palace' at Osborne House open to visitors, Cowes is well known as a world centre for sailing and has been the host to the Americas cup, the pubs are great and people generally friendly.

The peak season, school holidays, is from the middle of July to end of August when everything happens, but it can get busy in certain popular venues.

Good luck in your plans, PM me closer to the time if you need any further suggestions.

The great thing about the Isle of Wight is everything is 25min drive away.
Dont forget Julia Margret cameron's house in freshwater, Lee Millers home is near in chichester as well, but not open often

Whereabouts will you be staying? What sort of photography are you interested in (landscape, city, wildlife).
The only thing at the moment bring some waders. Lots of floods around.....

Hi Linda,

Hope you have a great time when you visit here.

Glasgow riverside is lovely for sunset/sunrise images.
If you are heading north, Glenfinnan / Arisaig and just about anywhere on the west coast is good. Pittenweem & anstruther on the east coast are great little fishing villages to capture.

Linlithgow for the Palace and Loch. My friend also runs a photo walk in Edinburgh (4 Hours) and will take you to some different places to see. Look for Edinburgh Photo Tours on trip adviser for ratings.

Oh - I offer some of the best coffee in Kincardine if you're passing.

Andy
