These little guys are only 6" to 8" tall and live in burrows under ground. Most often they take up residence when a rodent abandons their old hole, but can dig one if they have too.

Thxs everyone, this owl let me approach within 5', early morning, cloudy sky, threw a towel, setup tripod about 12" above ground, and used a wireless shutter release.

Two active nesting populations, one on Marco Island , Fla the other in Cape Coral. None in Naples despite the size of that city. Interesting little animals. Very photogenic.

How cute and adorable. I bet it would be difficult to find and capture a photo of one of these owls. Great shot! Thanks for the interesting info on the burrowing owl. :D

Found another site yesterday while riding my bike around Marco Island. There was a male and female at the site, will try to capture an image tomorrow and post. It's weird to see an owl live on the ground instead of a tree.

Darned if that isn't cute as a speckled pup. Nice, sharp photo too. Wish we could be lucky enough to have them.
