I do believe I'm gonna like this camera. It was worth the three day ordeal setting it up.......

about 50 yards, cropped very little

You will love this combination. The D7100 is a great camera, & don't underestimate the quality of the 55-300mm lens just because it's a 'kit lens'. It is actually a very sharp lens, & is light & compact to walk around with. It is not ideal in low light, but is fine for 'normal' outdoor daytime shooting. :-) :-)

Ditto Jimjay...I also have that combo and it works really well...the good old 55-300 is a great lens...
Your 90 yard shot is most likely suffering from natural haze which is the enemy of long shots...No.1 is great.

Thanks, Dook. I've been using the lens with a D3100 for some time, so am fairly familiar with it. The D3100 just is not quite enough camera for long lenses and I can see a world of difference in the first hour of shooting with the new camera.

Thank you also, SX2002. The 90 yarder was shot early this morning when I walked out to get the newspaper. I kinda liked the hazy effect.

Yes, it is a good effect, I wasn't suggesting there was anything wrong with it...if you aren't after that effect though it can be darn annoying. I've been trying for years to get a clear shot of the city of Adelaide (where I live) but every time I get up to the lookout everything is blanked out too much by haze..not smog though as it's always there, even on a windy day.
Cheers,
Ron.

It can definitely be a problem, Ron. With the cool weather we've been having it's been a daily early morning thing.

Thanks for the input, jwt. I have no doubt, especially since attempting some BIF's this morning. Will post some of them when I get them sorted out.
