I often take pictures of my students welding but use a compact or my dslr (both have full manual control). Last night I had a student who was preparing for a welding test with the boilermakers and I took this one with my phone. I had to put the exposure window right on the brightest spot to get the image I was looking for and was pleased with this one.

He will be making a 6 hour drive and will be observed welding by probably 15 or more welding inspector. If he passes it will nearly double his pay on most jobs.

WOW--with a phone ?? Excellent photograph; I'd frame it and hang it; Maybe even put it on canvass or even on a metallic medium. Alyn

Nice, impressive that you got it with a phone. I've taken pics of my dad welding, but it was in the daylight and is a dull thing compared to this.

Yes. This was indoors so the background was easier to get dark. A regular image if I just snapped the picture is below.

Thanks. I'm thinking about trying another tonight with my DSLR.

Definitely a subject that would lend itself to manual settings than letting your camera, or in this case your phone, have its way. I'm going to tuck "welding" away as a subject to work on. It's certainly a different style of available light.

What an interesting photo, something one does not normally see. I use the photo function on my phone a lot and am often pleasantly surprised!

Great shot. Doesn't it give you a headache looking at the arc?

No. The injuries from the arc normally are burns to the eyes. I have never had the "sand in your eyes" feeling in my 35 years if welding. I am not sure if the bright light will or will not damage a sensor. But mine seem fine.

I am such a fan of low-light photos and your first photo really appeals to me. It's mysterious and kind of scary...

Very nice photo. I take plenty of welding photos. Very nice with the phone. Keep up the great work Try oxy/act cutting long exposure with a density filter. Amazing results (you will have the trails of sparks) and the students always love their photos taken, Plasma is also very Cool. From an old Navy Welder.

Thanks . I'm an ex Navy welder myself. Not old yet. Just half a century.
