This is my favourite picture of Garry, at least my favourite during this past decade or so. The look on his face is so typical of him ... just that hint of cynicism and humour. On TV for 35 years, he is anything but camera shy, though he is less sure-footed when it's a still camera and much more comfortable if it's video. Well, I guess that shouldn't surprise me. So here he is. To get the skin tone right, I use spot metering on his face and worry about everything else later! With dark skin, I think that's the ONLY way to get a good portrait. And it helps if he/she isn't wearing white! OR worse, a baseball cap with a brim to create even more shadow!

I think he's adorable. He thinks he just looks OLD. All he sees is receding hair and wrinkles. Vanity, vanity.

He was a marine. Still does 200 pushups before breakfast. I think he's fine. Just not what he used to be. Some people have more issues with that than others.

"Thank you for your service," indeed!...

...and congratulations on your one-past-a-milestone anniversary!

Thanks to your photography, we can see him as you experience him, at least to a small degree (not knowing him or you, and all *blush*).

Nice photo :)

Yeah, he's very Semper Fi and LOVES NCIS. Figures. He was cleaning out his parents home with his brothers (his folks passed some years ago, but the boys are just getting to this unpleasant task) and Gar found his Marine Corp Uniform. Mind you, he joined up when he was 17. The uniform still FITS. Don't you hate him?

Because of the huge bright area behind your husband I thought a different background might work better. What do you think?

Maybe, but not THAT background. What's all that yellow stuff? It is a lake in the background. I don't think it has a name. There are so many of them around here. It's hard to find any place without a visible lake, river, or waterfall. I don't much notice them bcause they are so ubiquitous. But solid woods would probably have been nicer. Our backyard would have done well, actually. We have a little pond, but it's way back in our woods and you can't see it when the leaves are on the trees.

It is along a creek and that yellow stuff is moss that grows everywhere in the Pacific Northwest where I live. The process is the same, you can choose any background.

That is a great portrait of someone who is comfortable in his own skin.

I wouldn't change a thing.
