I'm trying to decide if I should have my old Nikon D70s fixed, shutter quit after many many many photos taken. The photo store told me it would cost around 300 or so to have it fixed. I did buy a Nikon D7000 to replace it already and love it. I have been hired to take two weddings this summer, June and August and want to have a back up camera body. Any thoughts on fixing, buying used, buying cheaper Nikon DSLR?
Diane,
I too own a D70 and love it too. Alas; the truth is that the camera isn't worth fixing. It has practically no retail value and the newer cameras surpass it in almost every feature. It's time to move on.

that was what I was afraid of. The camera store pretty much told me the same thing. I just hate to see that camera sit there but you are probably right. Considering this would be a backup camera body, what do you suggest for a replacement? Don't want to spend a fortune but it needs to be Nikon to interchange the lens. Not sure about buying used either???

check with keh.com they have an inhouse camera repair and can give a ballpark estimate over the computer. They are suposed to have a quick turnaround time also. havent used their repair center but am VERY SATISFIED with their used equipment dept. the d-70/s they have for sale run 200-300 dollars, it may be cheaper to trade your broken one in and get another one. Your d-70 is peferctly adequate for photography. just because it dosent have every new bell and whistle doesn'tmean it can't take fabolous photos. My main camera is an even older d-100 6mp. which can produce terrific 8x10'2 and even 11x15's. this mega pixel war is all hype. so what that the camera doesn't take video, thats what a camcorder is for. besides im a PHOTOGRAPHER not a CINEMATOGRAPHER.
I will check on that website, thanks much
I bought a D70 and D70s on ebay for around $200 each. The cameras had 362 and 774 clicks on their shutters and look like new. Cheap for a good back-up camera.
Which camera you should by is a tough question. Check out nikonusa.com and you can compare the cameras side by side. A lot of features, you may feel are "must haves" or "don't needs". It will at least give you an idea of what's there.
I too have a D70 camera. I am sending it to LifePixels to get it converted to IR(infrared).

I expect to get my D70 back from LifePixel on 1/3. I sent it to them on 12/6, and they sent it back to me on 12/22. Without the two Monday holidays, it would have been quicker.
I"v e seen others talking about IR. Why would you convert a camera to that? I guess I don't even know what it is. Could you explain?? what does it cost to convert?

I bought a used D70 on ebay for IR conversion. It had only 774 clicks on the shutter, so I expect it to have lots of life left. I didn't know IR conversion was possible till I read about it here. I had used IR film years ago, and I wanted to do some more.
IR photos can look very strange. The cost of the conversion and shipping was $270.
I'm sure other people will add their comments and post IR photos.

The best way to explain the merits of converting a camera to IR is to go to their site at LifePixels.com

I did find a nikon d70 on ebay for around 199. I didn't see how many clicks it had on the shutter however. I sent a message to the seller. Is that how you found out that info??
I will check out that lifepixel website. thanks

Yes. There are lots of programs that can tell the shutter count.
http://www.camerashuttercount.com/ is one you can use online. There's also ExifTool, Irfanview (with plug-ins), and several others.
Shutter count isn't everything, but I'd prefer to buy a camera with fewer clicks, 4,000 or below. Don't get carried away and overbid. You can often get a good D70(s) for under $200, but, of course, it depends. Be patient.
If I don't know the shutter count, I don't bid. "Not very many" is not a good answer.
well I gave this info to the seller on ebay. They didn't know how to check the number of clicks on the camera and told me not to bid. I also tried one of them and it said my camera did not allow it or something like that??? Now what
