I updated my D800e firmware last night , and I wish I'd done a before-and-after. One of the fixes is a better LCD preview... and does indeed seem to be much better, but I can't really be sure.
So do this, get a photo and zoom in, then do the update following the instructions to a tee... go back and look at original image you checked over and report if you can see a difference!

Follow their detailed instructions at link above- but in a nutshell.
You download update file to a computer, expand the file and then drag the .bin (mac) to the top level of a card ( not in any folder) ... load the card in the camera, then .... (follow nikons step by step- not these inst) . - DO NOT TURN OFF CAMERA WHILE IT UPDATES- MAKE SURE BATTERY IS COMPLETELY CHARGED! takes about 5 min to complete.

Google : D40 Firmware updates
It is not in this list, however there may be newer then what you have
Brief caution: I read elsewhere on the forum that the new firmware makes any third-party batteries impossible to use. Haven't tried it myself.
Just check my nikon message center. It showed updates for the Df (C 1.01), d3200 (C 1.03 Upgrade) and d5200 (C 1.02 upgrade) all dated 20 Jan. 2014.
Thanks, I'll update my D800e tonight & let you know if I can see a difference.

Yes, I'm leery of this also. Any informed comments?
If 3rd party batteries are now targeted, can other accessories be far behind?
Seems to have worked well for Apple - so far.

If that is true, and (considering Epson's behavior re OEM ink use) I suspect it is. It is a damn filthy example of borderline criminal merchandising. It ranks with the idea that your Ford will not operate with any fuel except that provided by Ford at four times the market price (and as in Epson's case, will probably purposely ruin the machine).
I have used Nikon equipment all my life (80 years and counting). Perhaps this behavior can explain why Nikon, the finest and most innovative of brands, is now number two, or lower, in the market. I suppose I will be forced into a Canon as they acquire an ever-larger market share, and pray they will not emulate Nikon.
Thank you, RichieC. I did it.
Last month, I tried over 10 times but no success.
Will post if I see any differences.
Hi, I cannot find a new firmware update for the D800e other that the one I did last April 13. Am I missing something. Thanks.

I just received a call from my Nikon dealer concerning the my current order for a D5300. He wanted to advise me that the battery that is shipped with a new D5300 is only rated for 50-60 pictures. The standard EN-EL14 battery is $60,00! That battery on eBay, 1500mah with a three year warranty, US seller is $17.00.
I cancelled the entire order.
Well, I'm glad I thought to check. I always like to be up-to-date, but these particular updates were released in April of 2013. Been there, seen that, upgraded that some time ago.
My comment did not take for some reason. I just want to point out this is not new news it has been available since early 2013. I'm sure there are people out there who are not aware of this and will find it beneficial. Thanks for posting this info for them.

I like the way my third party battery works...my d7000 works just fine also... I have never done any of the updates... if I never do the updates will I be ok?... will it always work like it does now?... is there any advantage in doing the updates?...
Funny, I ran accross a notice for new firmware, so I checked, and it said I needed it, so I assumed therefore it was the latest... I noticed it said April 2013
LOL still in the original intent.... I'll start over... For those who missed the April 2013 release of new firmware to the afor ementioned cameras, go to the page mentioned in my OP, and get it!!!
