This night time picture was taken just after sunset in San Francisco with 24mm focal length, 1/13 shutter speed, 4.0 aperture, ISO 6400, manual focus, auto white balance and auto timer. The camera was not on a tripod because I left the quick release plate in the car. Instead I hand hold the camera and set it on the railing. Because it was taken at ISO 6400, this picture is noisy but not noticeable on computer screen. If I used a tripod, I would have set the ISO at 100 or 400 which means my shutter speed will be much longer but noise will be minimal.

Instead of remote shutter, you can use the camera's auto timer. Also, use mirror lockup if your camera is equipped with one. A good quality lens will make a big difference. For example, the Canon 50mm f1.8 or F1.4 prime lens (or equivalent Nikon lens) which are affordable and much better than the kit lens would improve your night time photography. Just my opinion.

Nice shot! Was that along Ghirardelli Square or along the inner bay? I haven't been in SF since 1976 but its a great city for photography.
