Take a lot of pictures....don't fall in boiling pots and don't push your luck getting too close to Bison. There is a facility in West Gate that has bears if that interests you.

I just loved the Grizzly and Wolf Discover Center in West Yellowstone. You can get great photos of grizzlies with natural habitat without fences in the way of shooting as the place to watch them is elevated above the fencing. http://www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.com/

Tour Lamar, Hayden and Norton once each AM from dawn to about 11 a.m. then lunch and nap. Then reverse each PM from about 2 p.m. to 5 or so. this assumes you are going by car. We were there the first two weeks of may in 2012 and captured 50 bears, grizzly and black, and wolves including the one in this avatar. But 2010 was not so good.

Had to giggle as you're about the only one who uses the proper term "bison." Heck, I was in my sixties before I found out that I used to collect Bison Head Nickles!!

I first went to Yellowstone in '64 and again in 73,88 and 2012. The big difference in 2012 was hiking out a few miles to various attractions such as waterfalls or super vantage points. My wife brought a D3100 and we took several hundred pictures. Had a few keepers blown up. I picked up a D7000 and we're going to make probably our final "physical get out and hike trip." We are getting well versed in the history, geology and geography of the park, as well as some of the many inhabitants, but we feel we've barely scratched the surface. It is not feasible for us to drive from Connecticut, so like last time, we'll fly into Salt Lake and get a car. My Polish wife wants to spend some more time at the fantastic Genealogy Center and then go to the Park for a couple weeks. Few have done the SW corner, Bechler area, or run the western border and Hebgen Lake earthquake area.
Despite of our experiences and planning, we're sure that lot of great points will be missed! That's okay if I can see them from the road nest time!! By the way, I made reservations in the park over a year in advance to get the accomodations we wanted. Still planning! Many can't afford the time to do Lamar Valley. Shame I had to wait for retirement to make another attempt. Weather permitting, I hope to do the Beartooth Highway. So much to do!!

Heard a lot about the early A.M. Kind of goes along with the "golden hour" theory! Boy, the first 2 weeks in May could be tough following a big snow season, plus some the entrances probably won't be open. Got to be like visiting a different place as opposed to June thru August!!

Big Ski Tours, Don't drive around the park by yourself. It is nice being driven around, they take you place you would not know of, it's relatively inexpensive and you are in the company of 5-6 people.

the have three tours, Lower, Upper and both. Depends on your time there. I did not do the upper but that is where the animals are, well large groups of them.

I googled Yellowstone tours and out of the results picked them, Google I just looked and could not find them by that name. Although it came close. I think it may have been Yellowstone Tours. basically they came to Bozeman and picked me up in a van at my hotel, then others and we toured the lower Yellowstone. Like I said there was an upper tour too.

In Bozeman is a really beautiful hotel that is like on gigantic log home, has waterfalls in the main lobby and bobcats and all sorts of stuffed animals around the water to give you that Mo feel. nice place.

Tours are certainly a thought for many. We plan on doing a few more Ranger walks, but we've got a pretty good handle on what's where. Just gotta spread it out to avoid a med-evac! Thanx for the thoughts!

Spring is a good time, and there are many, to be carrying bear spray, particularly when you get off the road and travel in small groups. Don't want to know about fires! :)
Got caught flat-footed and didn't have time to grab a 55-300.

About 100 feet across a pond 55mm
