I have heard may fantastic things about this lens. Is there a recommendation of a Tamron or Sigma or other lens that is better?

The 17-55mm F2.8 DX lens was the one and only true Pro quality lens ever manufactured by Nikon in the DX format. Its a wonderful lens, and still very valuable.

Besides cost, the only drawback is that it has no VR.
Honestly, I never found the lack of that a problem.
VR is more useful withonger lenses.

VR is more useful with longer lenses.

The older we get, the more we see the value of VR.

When I had my D90, I wanted a wide lens for landscape work. First, I purchased the Tamron 17-50. I never fully appreciated that lens, despite the fact that I tried diligently. I eventually traded it to Adorama for the Nikkor 17-55. Difference of day and night. The Nikkor lens, as MT Shooter has noted, is a truly professional lens that yields outstanding results. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I am not in the market for a lens in the 17-55 range but if I were my choice would be a Sigma 17-50 f2.8. It is smaller, cheaper and razor sharp.
Tamron also makes a good one but I have no experience with it.

I bought my D200 from a pro photographer friend. The Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 was her bread-and-butter DX lens.
