Nicely photographed Yvonne. Here in Texas we call similar beetles - June Bugs. Do a search on Australian Chafer beetles and you'll probably identify your subject.

Thanks William, looked it up , its a Brown Cockchafer aka Rhopaea Cane Beetle. It is attracted to house lights and eats plant roots. So looks harmless enough but is a pest. 8-)

Same in Oklahoma when I was a lad. They used to congregate on our window screens, and fly around the outdoor lights at dusk.
