'Wating for the customers.' I went to the grocery store today and remembered the contest when I saw the carts in a nice row. I have always liked different views so I got on my knees to take this. Geting up again was not fun!!

How to pamper your child while shopping at Cosco...

I was sitting in the parking lot at a local Kroger and this guy comes swooping down and lands on the shopping cart handle about 6 feet from my car door. Stayed there about 10 minutes. Still had blood on his beak from his morning meal.

An interview with PW4GDF,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Since my teens when I had a little darkroom in a shed!

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I took some college classes mostly for Photoshop

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A view of something that is a little different.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used my tiny little purple Nikon3500 that fits in my purse or pocket. No special set up, just me on my knees.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
No I do nothing really with my images, store them on external drives.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My inspiration is everything around me, even something that looks like nothing can look great in a photograph. I was inspired to take this shot because I saw the carts and remembered the contest.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Win the lottery and get more equipment and travel to get more experience.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
That I would still enjoy it so many years later and could have made more of a career choice in some way.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
The gift of sight.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
It would be on the camera I was using at the time and enjoying the result.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
The sun in Florida is usually with me.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Some form of artwork or craft.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Trying to get off my knees in front of the grocery carts, if I tried to pull myself up by holding on to a cart the entire line up would move!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No but I am hoping to figure out how to start a blog.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Always look around and behind you when shooting.

An interview with abby,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have studied photography since high school - learned on a Nikon FM1 film camera.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Still looking for my niche - seems like I like all types of photography.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
The composition.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used a D800 with an 8mm Rokinen wide angle lens and sat the camera on my camera bag, inside the Home Depot cart. I did get quite a few curious looks.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I added some sharpening and clarity in Lightroom.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I had always wanted to try the "shopping cart" shot. You can also slowly roll the cart with the shutter open to give some blur to the surroundings but I wasn't patient enough this time around.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Lowe's instead of Home Depot!

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
To be more patient and that there would be plenty of "bad" shots.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
a 9-stop ND filter - enables me to use long shutter speeds in bright sunlight.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
my Nikon 24-70mm, 2.8 - seems I shoot mostly in this range.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
nothing special.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
teach photography

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
none I can share

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
www.flickr.com/photos/knee_doc

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I'm the one that loves the advice on UHH!
If anything, I would be more concerned with the composition and the artistic merit of an image, rather than all the technical stuff.

It really annoys me when people have obviously post processed images and then they say something like this.

An interview with catfish252,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I got started into film photography back in the 70's while in the Air Force stationed in Thailand Vietnam, and Germany the hobby lasted about 10 years and then it just got too expensive to process the film. Picked it back up about 8 years ago and bought a Nikon D40, not having to worry about film made it so much enjoyable.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training some DVD courses from Kelby and the likes.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Interesting subjects can always make a good picture, however some people can make a rusty tin can into a good picture - I am not one of them.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? That was taken with a Nikon D300s and a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens, no special setup

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
There was very little processing done to that image, maybe some brightness and contrast in Photoshop CS5

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
What inspired me was that the Hawk came down and perched on the shopping cart that was about 5-6 feet from my window

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what? In regards to the image? No, the Hawk coming to me was like a gift from God.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
That I would need a second job to finance it.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I really don't have one.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
For Christmas I treated myself to a D610 and the Nikon 85mm 1.8G and I really am having a great time learning that lens.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I always have my SB-600 but I seldom use it.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Fly - I used to fly B-52s in the Air Force, I really miss it.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
No

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No, I very seldom post any of mine.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Just keep at it: as in life there is always something new to learn.

An interview with Ken Mahar,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
For many years. I photographed my work on construction projects as well as nature photos.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have done a few photo workshops but no formal education.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Subject matter counts but it is the ability to put forth a feeling that will draw emotions.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I normally use my 5D Mark III but this image was taken with my iphone at Costco. I just could not resist recording the image. This child was totally engulfed by this stuffed animal.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Normally yes with lightroom 4, (I need to get 5 I know), but this was straight of my phone.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I went on an African Safari in 2009. I was fortunate enough to spend the day with Mama Sarah Obama in her home town of Kogelo, Kenya. In showing her the images that I had captured thus far into my safari, she was so enthralled in seeing what I had captured that I decided then and there that I wanted to share and sell my images.
This shot was just too good to miss.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I did not ask permission from the parents and they don't know that I had even taken the shot. Next time I would probably ask permission.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How much money that I would be spending on equipment.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Probably my tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My 24-105 L series lens because it is so versatile and sharp.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I shoot mostly with ambient light, reflector at times and rarely a flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Probably woodwork

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Too long to talk about here, but you can find my NBC interview on youtube by searching Ken Mahar in Africa.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://www.ken-mahar-photos.com now showing at Mistral Restaurant & Bar Gallery Redwood Shores, Redwood City Library, Coming in May Silicon Valley Open Studios

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Learn your camera functions, shoot as often as you can, even if it is in your own backyard.
