Engagement pictures in April - no leaves :(

I'm taking engagement pictures for my nephew who will be home in April to do them. We live in the U.P. of Michigan and won't have any leaves on the trees in April. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for pictures. They want outside pictures, but if anyone is familiar with the U.P. April isn't the best month for outside pictures. We'll be lucky if the snow is gone, lol! We do live on Lake Michigan, so I'm thinking that is my best opportunity - to take them on the beach where you can't see the leafless trees. We live in a small town, so "downtown" pictures are quite limited too. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Does the couple have favorite places or places that mean something in their relationship?

Maybe they would consider indoor portraits OR take outdoor pictures and just replace the background with your soft wear. I use "on-one" and it works great.

Like a favorite coffee shop? Or restaurant?

Shoot them at a nearby lighthouse; there's so many beautiful ones up there. Or near an old barn.

Blur the background if not distracting.
Walkway with tree limbs that create leafless canopy.
Rocky coastline.
I hope to visit up there someday.....

What is the problem with a leaf less trees? Are not the intricacies of branches an interesting background if well chosen?

It is not about the season but location location location.

As suggested finding out if the kids have a preferred place is the best starting point. (location)

I think these pictures aren't about showing a pretty place, it's about showing their connection. If the setting can be a "prop" to help show that connection, then absolutely use it. Otherwise, concentrate on the couple, with the background as unobtrusive as possible.

Thanks everyone, you're right. It's about them, not the place. Actually, I took this picture last summer and it wasn't planned or anything. They were out to camp just wearing t-shirts sitting on the swing, and it turned out great! They have a great connection with each other and that's the look I want to capture! We do have a beautiful lighthouse by the lake and we certainly have barns around too. I guess I shouldn't be worried about it. Thanks for all your help.

A building or rock wall with some nice texture works just as well as trees. Also the ideas about along the beach, or on a walk-bridge somewhere with water in the background.

Start looking now, and taking pictures of various sites that will be available and see how they would look with the couple in front. I tend to spend lots of time going around finding backgrounds for either posing people in front of, or to drop in as BG replacements.

Why do you think trees without leaves are ugly?
