Lens advice

I am heading to Sanibel in Feb. will visit Ding Darling and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Have Nikon D3s and D600. Was going to get new Tamron 150-600 but it won't be released in time. So I will rent a lens. I can rent any lens from lensprotogo to be delivered to my hotel. I am thinking 600 mm Nikon. What do you recommend? Most of the opportunities will not be BIF but birds at rest. Corkscrew has 2.5 mile boardwalk through varied environments. Will take second body with 70-200 2.8 for gators etc. thank you for your advice

I would not use the 600mm unless you have a GOOD way to support it and carry it. Personally, I would put a 2X behind the 70-200 and travel light !

If I were to rent something, I think it would be the 200-400 with 1.4X .....

I have been to both several times. My birding lens of choice is a 500mm prime. At Ding Darling a 500mm can be too much lens at times. Corkscrew can be long lens territory but I agree with imagemeister ... a good combo would be the 70-200 and a 200-400 with an extender

Thank you, that is what I will do. I do have Feisol CF Tournament Tripods rated at 22 lbs and I was going to get a Wembley Gimbal with it, all delivered to and shipped back from Hotel but the 600 was probably too much lens for me. The 200-400 looks hand holdable though I will still take the Feisol tripod and Acratech heads the 200-400 is 7 lbs. I am trying to learn what I can before I go. I am comfortable shooting in sports venues but inexperienced with birds. Thanks again to you both
