What to do when the weather is bad

Often times when I post photos of our nice weather I get a response of something like this:
We have a balmy -20 degrees today with the wind chill. Or, I wouldn't go outside unless I had to. Often times if you want to photograph something and the weather is a negative factor, then you can do what I did here: Set up some objects and a background and play with the lighting and create your own indoor photograph studio. I'm learning all about lighting now with the right angles, intensity of light and reflected light. There are many online helpful sites to guide you in the right direction for proper lighting. For these photos I have been experimenting and trying different things and learning from many, many very poor photos. When you experiment it is a great way of learning what works and what doesn't. These were among the photos that I felt were acceptable. All the rest I deleted but gained knowledge that can be used in the future for the next studio shot.

I agree. The only way we all learn is to experiment, practice and to make mistakes (the more the better actually, as long as they're not the same ones!). Now... you're not going to add that these aren't your toys are you Brent?

Hi Brent - good advice on what to do with photography when stuck indoors. Like the photos you posted. Could you possibly post the websites on lighting you found to be helpful? I'd like to learn more about lighting too.

You found some cute toys Brent!!! Those freezie weather reports make me glad I live in the south....... which is still pretty darned freezie but without the feet and feets of snow!! And your stage is pretty neat too. :)

Paul, these are all my toys (and bookends) except the last photo has 2 dolls that are my wifes! She has a major collection that I may photograph in the future too.

Thanks Singing Swan. It's fairly easy to set up a home studio. All you need is a table, some good lighting a tripod, some kind of dropcloth or fabric (for the background) and your unlimited creativity!
