Hi I'm new to this, my husband is treating me to a decent camera and has been told to get the Canon 70d , as a beginner I'm worried this would be out of my league, as starting from scratch to learn it all. I'm interested in taking family photos and landscapes.. Is another camera recommended for a beginner , would appreciate any advice ..thanks

No. The 70D is a great start! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Take it and enjoy. :-)

Welcome to the forum Tropez! I have a more modest Canon SLR, but you'll find plenty of help on UHH and elsewhere. Just start slowly, on automatic (if there is such a setting :) ) and learn composition and exposure. Have fun!

Don't underestimate your capabilities! Accept the 70D and learn as you go. It is a very capable tool that you will grow into. Good luck and post here soon.

That would be a very wise choice. It is at the higher end of the crop frame bodies and will serve you well. Enjoy it.

I also say, grab it and learn as you go. I just bought the 70D and am loving it. It has been over 35 years since I had a good SLR. This forum is great for help.

Equally important will be the lens you will purchase.

Take the camera and I promise you'll not be disappointed. You'll find all kinds of information at no cost to help you learn. You Tube has many helpful videos and you can ask as many questions as you'd like here on the hog.

Sorry that it has to be a Canon......

Seriously, the camera is a good entry point. I would strongly advise, that once you get the camera, take the manual and the camera and sit down and go through the whole manual. Play with the camera as you read the manual.

Should you have questions, use the search function, review the FAQs, then ask here should you couldn't find a answer.

There is a wealth of knowledge here should you run into a problem.

You are lucky to have such a generous husband. When you get the camera read the manual. It will be confusing at first, don't let that worry you. As you start to use the camera things will become easier. Continue to go over the things that you have learned and reread the manual. Take lots of photos Again don't be concerned with thw shots that you don't like.Even the best of the pros make many shote that they don' like. I have been shooting for over 40 years-mostly film, and I can't tell you how many bad photos I have made. Most of all - Have fun. Post som shots wwhen you feel comfortable

The Canon 70D is a mid-level DSLR: the Rebels are more entry-level, and there are more pro-oriented models. The more advanced cameras work faster, and they give a lot more control. The flip side is that you have to make more decisions. Good decisions will make your picture better than than camera would have done on its own, but bad decisions will make the pictures worse.

You may want to think about where you want your photography to be in a year, and how hard you want to work to get there. If you see this as a nice hobby, then the 70D is a great choice. But if you mainly want to record memories, I think the entry-level cameras will do everything you need, give you control when you want it, and not overwhelm you. A Canon Rebel or the Nikon D3200 are two excellent examples. If or when you outgrow the entry-level camera, it is easy to get a more advanced one.

What do you use to take pictures now? A camera phone, point & shoot, or something else?

Welcome to our forum! Better to have more camera than you think you need, rather than vice versa.

72, I would recommend something better, but since Hubby is getting it for you, go ahead and humor him. Pretend you like it.
What a lucky girl, you must have been REALLY good last nigh...........!
Again, welcome
SS

Edit: that camera is GREAT for movies too, try it. ;-)
