Attached is my first Macro attempt of a green caterpillar who was chewing on my poppy plant. I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 105mm f2.8 Macro lens. No flash was used and the camera was on a tripod. This is also my first photo submitted to UHH for (hopefully) your viewing pleasure. Feel free to offer comments good or bad or to edit if you think it will look better.

This is a nice close-up, and it appears that you already cropped from original capture.
So you understand the workings of your lens, a true macro can only be captured when lens is pre-set to Minimum Focusing Distance. A 105-mm macro lens on a DX body dictates a Working Distance (lens front element to subject) of 6.3-inches. Any farther away is a close-up, but in PP, the image can be cropped to macro FoV. This image looks a bit wider FoV than a true macro, but an excellent start for available light.

Keep shooting!
Nikonian 72,
Yup, that looks like the same little critter as mine. I did crop the photo somewhat and thought I had the camera in as close as possible so it would just retain focus. I used auto focus for the shot. I generally crop to a 4X6 image. Thanks for the positive comments.
