Right! So there would be evidence of you buying stolen property. :D

With a serial number one could check online to see if it were stolen.

And if the seller were willing to meet in such a place, there is a greater chance that the item was NOT stolen

I never seem to have a bit of trouble with these parking lot sales. When I climb out the driver's side, my son steps out the passenger door with a very old, well-used CAR-15. Of course, the kevlar vest is obvious as is the badge on the chain around his neck. Haven't had a deal go sour in years, but a lot of sellers get nervous when I set the laptop on the hood. If they run, we get a license plate number (on film or SD) and let them run. As he's out of his jurisdiction, my son would have all sorts of paperwork to fill out just for flattening the tires. The really strange part is how the price goes down when the sellers do stick around.

It's good he has the badge around his neck. Otherwise, the seller might think there was something strange going on. :D

This would probably be a good way for a seller to dress, too.

Arrange to buy it and take a couple of honest solid cops with you. Some at your local police station should be happy to oblige. Should not take long to determine if the seller is legit
or a scumbag crook.

If the seller is a crook you'd be doing something significant by helping to round up
a scumbag and get the satisfaction of watching him being taken down.

Great sting.

I found a Bigma 50-500mm Pentax-mount listed on Kijiji last week for only $750. The item was supposedly new or unused but the seller did not have the packaging. I made several attempts to arrange to look at the lens but the seller for some reason would not provide his address and phone number. He wanted to do the transaction in a parking lot. When I didn't respond to that email he complained. I told him I was wary of meeting in a parking lot and that I was getting the impression that the item was "hot" as in stolen. He replied quickly to that email with a terse "item is sold. So, what do you think?

As a musician I've always taken a dim view of stolen instruments and I've known too many others who've had equipment taken from them, including my brother many years ago. I've never really encountered this in camera gear, however. But it left me with the same unclean feeling and I had to go take a shower. Thanks for the opportunity to vent. The listing is still active. Here is the link to the listing: http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-cameras-camcorders-Sigma-s-APO-50-500mm-F4-5-6-3-DG-OS-HSM-lense-W0QQAdIdZ541080567

When ever I buy something like this on EBAY, Craig's, or any other such, I always ask the seller for the Serial number. Normally, they have no problem providing it, and if they do, I move on. Also, like mikeg492 said, meet in the parkinglot of your local police station--donut shop might work as well. ;) Seriously though, you want to meet somewhere that you are protected, very public, lots of people, video surveillance, police presence, etc.. I often meet at the food court of my local mall for such transactions. I pretty much never have them come to my house. Some bad guys use that tactic to birddog opportunities.

When I sell equipment on ebay, I always include a shot of the S/N. Some people don't like to make the number public because they think it somehow gives others control over it.

I have thought of selling some things using somebody's list but my reluctance has been the reports of people visiting to look and then coming back to rob. That said, given the reluctance to search our a compromise gives me suspicions also.

Honest cops? Is that like "if you like your current insurance you can keep it?"

I sold some camera equipment on Craig's List & refused to have anyone come to my home or give them my phone number. We met once at a McDonalds parking lot & once at a Best Buy parking lot.Believe me my camera equipment was not stollen I just wanted no one knowing my name or where I lived.Maybe that was how this person felt as well!

When I made transactions from craigslist wether buying or selling, I always use parking lot - Bestbuy or Walmart or inside the Mall during daytime.

The food court in a mall sounds like a good place. Lots of people, but it doesn't sound suspicious.

In Australia that depends on what state you are in.

I have a friend, an ex Soldier, who is a Federal Police Officer; he's
kind of "corny", but 100% honest. A straight shooter
figuratively as well as literally. From the huge drug busts
the AFP regularly execute, I reckon the vast majority of AFP are like my friend... A credit to this country.

The Queensland cops seem straight as arrows too.

Don't get me started on the scumbag criminal infested Victoria (South Eastern Australia) Police Force though.
