Finding "Not" Nemo...

Went to the aquarium Saturday with my son and the Grandkids. My grandson went nutso over this fish that is apparently one of Nemo's friends.
Very crappy light. I saw this grouping, put the camera on "Intelligent" Auto. Straight out of the camera. Thought I had raw also but still sorting out too many settings...

Forget the color. What are your thoughts on the composition?

I like the composition but feel it should be taken in on both sides. May I post an edit with the blue taken out, and this crop done?

Yes! By all means, tweak away.
I only have Silkypix editor that came with the camera and it doesn't do much to jpegs.

Software is on my short list.

I just have Photoshop Elements 12 and am still a beginner at it, really, but here is what I came up with fiddling around. Let me know if it pleases you at all.

Whew! Thanks for the WB adjustment, HT. It was hard to look past that. I think this photo is about the little boy and the fish. I would try to get rid of everything else.

That was quick. Thank you! Looks good. Weird light... pointing straight at a tank, color of fish and faces is fine. Pointing away, color fine. Angled to the glass like this - blue man group. Must be the glass

That could be another cropping choice, but I see it as a family shot.

Does WB affect the entire photo? In the original, the woman at the back has normal looking hair from the incandescent light on the sign above and behind her. The fish in question is actually bright blue and black and the "white" fish just to the right are bright yellow. Shooting straight at the tank all the colors are good. It must be something about the glass?

Hey, we all see things differently. :-) That's what makes this so cool. Since the OP doesn't have much for editing software, does anyone have advice on the WB setting that should be used in an aquarium setting such as this?

I do believe Picassa is free. Skylane, picassa would have fixed the WB problem. Does anyone have a link for the free download?

I have never encountered that effect but it was extreme. I tried to put some color in the fish but wasn't able to get that very well. I think you are right, it must have something to do with the thick glass.

Great color on the fish. The strong light in the tank must be reflecting back off the paint color on the back of the tank, messing up your white balance at some angles.

Not sure it's up to this kind of challenge, though. It has no specific white balance options. I tried a couple of its available edits for color temperature, auto-color, neutral color picker - nothing came close to helping.

But since you mentioned Picasa...filtered b&w, slight HDR-ish, vignette, exposure tweaks.

Nicely balanced composition between the visitors and what they're viewing. It's great you were able to capture them all looking at the same thing and all interested :)
