I was just wondering if there would be a better way to have taken these shots as I was on a cruise ship and wouldn't have made sense to use a tripod to get more detail, maybe I just need to look at doing some better editing or maybe there just wasn't a better shot to be had, I always compare my shots to others and then its hard to be pleased.

I really like the first one. I like that you have a low horizon. Colors are good and you timing, getting the sun hidden behind the cloud, is really good.

Thanks, I'm still trying to understand really what makes an impressive picture, when I see shots on here, I just wonder if its my talent that's lacking, creativity or just the camera. I guess I just need to be patient and that will take care of most of it.

It could be your PP that needs a little more uff. Would you mine if I show you what you have.

Thank you. Just a little bit of time in LR, adjusted contrast and clarity, then a small amount of Vign. to bring the eye to the sunset.

You were on a ship. Not much to see out there but sea and sky, so you have to take shots of what is out there. Not the most dramatic sunsets, but not bad, and you got the horizons dead-level. Would you like to see one of them cropped a little differently. with intensified color, and in a frame? You could take a fresh look that way.

Wow that looks great Bill, obviously editing is half the battle or perhaps more, great work.

Is clarity the same thing as sharpness?

Here's another view. Colors intensified a bit, cropped to move sun slightly off center and place ocean on the bottom 1/3 of frame, with sky filling the rest. Frame put on in Picasa.

Clarity - is a lot like sharpness but it does has a different effect. I find when adjusting sharpness in most programs it increase the noise in most JPeg's. It has it's own slider in Light Room and find it useful to some degree along with the contrast slider.

No, but Linda from Maine used the museum matte frames and told us how to find it. Easiest way I have found so far to put a nice frame on something. It's a free download!
