This bird creeps me out!

The Anhinga swims completely under water with only the head exposed and spears fish with that pointed bill. Graceful and elegant in flight, downright creepy and pre-historic looking on and in the water. This one was taking advantage of the late afternoon sunshine. The background was in deep shadow. Found this male in a pond on Seabrook Island S.C.

Looks like a cross between a bird and a snake.

It's all about the light! Great shot. BTW the Anhinga is also known as the "Snake Bird".

I look at things differently. I think in terms of the evolution this bird has undergone to become more successful. The greater the adaptation (specialization) the more beautiful and intriguing they become.
Nicely done.

The anhinga is an amazing bird and probably my favorite bird action to watch and photograph.
They will dive completely under the water to fish just like cormorants, but the cormorant will grab a fish while the anhinga spears it.
The anhinga will then have to get the fish off it's bill and will often do this by flipping it up and then catching it in mid air. Quite an amazing sight.

If anyone is interested I have many example of anhingas in action here:
