It's the other way around. The pop up flash serves as a master to the other speedlites that are off the camera. It will work with most optically controlled slaved speedlites but only the Canon models in the ETTL mode.

I think that I have asked the wrong question. The problem would be solved with a hot shoe adaptor for the hot shoe on the 7D that would allow me to use my ancient Vivatar 283 thyristor flash. The adaptor would have to have a power cord input so that teh flash would work

Hello boberic
I have to say jeep daddy is correct to learn how to to do this you might want to go to utube . It is a lot easier to do with camera in hand while viewing a video . My t3i with a canon 430ex11 works just fine. once you do it a few times it becomes very easy to do.
I hope this information helps Saying hello from Pittsburgh
P.S I was typing before I viewed your second post

The built-in flash will work as long as the "283" either has a built in optical sensor or is sitting on an optical slave sensor mount. These little mounts are available at many camera locations. This will require that you use MANUAL settings on the flash and camera.

I have this Wein adapter for using a 283 with my Pentax-K20. It can be mounted directly on the camera’s hot shoe or you could use it remotely with a PC sync cord if that’s what you’re trying to do.

If you have an off camera flash that operates in the slave mode you can use your pop up flash to trigger it by setting the pop up flash to its lowest setting possible. If your flash does not have a slave mode, you can purchase optical slave mounts rather cheaply on e-bay.

I know this is a silly thought but somehow buying a slave just does'nt sound proper

The on-board can trigger an optical slave. With some of the Canon flash units, there is a remote built in that will trigger the camera, which will then operate both flash and slave if set up properly.

Or any number of Nikon (SU-4 mode) or third party flash units.
Heck, even my studio strobes have optical slaves on them.

I would not recommend connecting the Vivitar 283 to your 7D with a power cord. First, it won't work. Secondly, if it does fire, you might fry the circuitry in the camera.

I agree with other about using an optical slave. I have a Wein peanut slave that plugs directly into the side of the 283 that I use occasionally with a Canon 5D Mk III. Very compact and works beautifully.

The pop-up flash on the Cameras can control the Flashes. Camera will be the Master and off Camera will be the Slave. Just turn head towards subject and have body pointed in direction of Camera to receive the flash form camera.

This brief video should answer all your questions. He has others also worthwhile.
