Track first, then shoot!

Here’s a quick tip that can help you get better pix of birds in flight: Track first, then shoot. What do I mean? Begin tracking the bird, focus on the bird and then fully press the shutter button to begin shooting. I guarantee you’ll get more keepers!

From my limited experience so far taking this good advice is going to take practice, practice, practice... Guess it's time to hit the waterfront and work on keeping seagulls in the viewfinder long enough to accomplish shot.
:)

Seagulls are an excellent practice target!

Great advice! I learned something the other day while sitting near a Lock and Dam photographing eagles. I noticed there were more people there are Saturday then Sunday. It was because the wind was behind us on Saturday and to our face on Sunday. When the eagles (or any bird) would hit the water for a catch they would face us for their "close-up" IF the wind was at our back so they could get lift. I never thought of that before.

That is an important element of flight. Facing into the wind improves lift. Many birds will use that when landing, taking off, diving for fish, etc. Having an understanding of that goes a long way towards getting better bird in flight pictures. When sun and wind get together, it can be magical.
