Tom - nice photo. Have you thought to try cropping vertically keeping just the boys in the photo in front of the flag?

Hi,

Thanks, Honestly no I did not even think to Crop.

I take about 300 photo's at the boys games, out of those I save maybe 75 or so and send to my Daughter and she post them on the High School Facebook Page for all the kids and their Families to enjoy.

The kids love it and at every game want to know if I can get shot of them in action...ha ha...I try my best, and I really try to get photos of the kids who are subs and do not start the game.

I get the most feedback from those parents appreciation and some have told me it has helped build their child's confidence in playing and to me that is really a big reward with my limited ability to take photos..

Having fun as an old man..Thanks a million for the feedback, I will crop that one and resend to the kid and his parents. They may just frame it then my chest would puff out...ha ha

Blessings

I know what you mean exactly. I was shooting a boys indoor soccer tournament last weekend and I tried for good shots of all the boys on the team we were cheering rather than just the son of my friends. Shooting from the sidelines many of the clear shots still needed aggressive cropping to make many of the photos work (by cropping out the blank space, better framing, etc).

Better yet, try shooting vertically.

Thanks Very much.

I have tried vertical a few times, in a fast action sport like basketball and down near the baseline, it is very very difficult, at least for me to follow the action and keep it in the frame, so I have continued to shoot 99% in Portrait position.

None of my shots are taken for framing, just for fun and the kids to see themselves as suggested about cropping.

I will do that on some future postings and crop any the kids or their parent's might want for a potential framing photo.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Blessings,

tom

Those difficulties are part of why I added battery grips w/vertical shutter release to my D200s. My D2Xs pro body already has the vertical shutter release on it.

OR use a wider lens and crop vertically in PP. You're cutting off legs so a vertical crop won't work very well. I understand that you see these as mere snapshots but it also gives you a chance to practice and learn to take better photos down the road. I bet your grandson would love a nice enlargement to hang on his wall. You might want to try a 35mm or 50mm 1.8 if you're right on the sidelines. Hope you don't mind but here are a couple done with a 50mm,1.8........

I'm not sure a full body is needed for everything. Yes, we'd all like to have the MJ shot of him rising up for the spectacular slam that posterizes some NBA victim ... But, I think a crop of this one with the boys faces and arms in front of the flag is more dramatic than having their entire bodies...

I made my own first serious effort as sports this past weekend. Got hand it to the professionals as it's much tougher than I expected. I was on the goal line beside a soccer goal for two 45-minutes games in a mini tournament and the sideline for the third. Shooting vertically had more of the drama I was looking for, but it also made it harder to capture the action as well as leaving you have less leeway for cropping a picture. Maybe for basketball with a focus on the basket a portrait would be easier / better. But midcourt action will probably still be better served with landscape.

Just some thoughts and reflections on my own recent experience as I cull through and edit the pictures from last Saturday on another Saturday morning ...
