I caught this Great Blue Heron coming off a nest that is under construction. I think he was going for more twigs.
Nice! It almost looks like it's heading down for a fish or something. It's very focused.
Good job of staying focused yourself. It's hard to get these BIF. I like the background on the last one, but the first one for the wings and "in flight" appearance.
The first one on download is excellent. It deserves a place on your wall.

Excellent series. You really nailed him.
I am trying to convince myself these are paintings. Because if they are photos, the bar I set for myself is not even close to what is possible. Thanks for ruining my day. LOL

:) Thanks John for the very nice compliment!
I thought it might be helpful to some folks if I shared the details of what I did with these photos. I've picked one of the shots as an example. The first is straight out of the camera. The second is a duplicate of the finished product. I made some slight adjustments in Lightroom 4 for white balance & highlights / shadows, and cropped it for composition. I then loaded it in Adobe Elements 11 and used auto settings in "Brightness and Contrast" and "Lighten and Darken" for touchup. Next I used "unsharp mask" at 50%, radius 3.0 pixels, threshold 1.0 level. That's basically it.
I did use a tripod to shoot this. I was very near the nest and the birds did not care at all that I (among others) were watching. I had the camera ready and just hung out for probably about an hour waiting for them to do something interesting. When they did I concentrated on maintaining focus and fired away. That's it. Hope this was helpful.
