I took this picture as a silhouette but am really not sure how to enhance it by cropping. I think it needs to be cropped, but just can't seem to come up with a good solution. Feel free to crop or modify as needed. Minimal pp done on this photo and I have several others that are close up, but wanted to give you the full tree exposure.
I tried several crops, but this is the one that looked best to me. I removed the diagonal branch that was sticking out on the right. I wanted to leave the small blue patch in the sky, and minimize the presence of the bare branches on the left.

Oh you did good! Yeah that diagonal stick had to go. I might even crop a bit off of the bottom? I don't know why I was so stumped! Thank you!

I'm glad you like it. You're very welcome. That one was difficult to figure out. I tried about a dozen before finding one that looked right. Usually it's easier to see what should be done. Yes, some more could come off the bottom which would give you a more conventional photo shape, too.
Nicely done HT. My eye travels all the way through the image now.

I'm usually very good at figuring out a good crop, but not this time. Thanks again...
Using HT's crop but with a bit more taken from the bottom, I did a bit of boost and saturation in Picasa. I also tried playing with a few special effects. This is one of those compelling images you can spend hours playing with :)
edit: the slightly smaller size is not letting me "store original"

  This image is really shaping up. I'd call that beautiful!!
I took a slightly different approach .... while keeping the elements largely in silhouette, I cleaned up the tree on the right considerably, removed the diagonal vine, and cropped out a good deal of the top, left, and a smidgen of bottom so that I would have some interesting framing work around the Heron.

The image of the bird is quite good.
I like the bird on the branch, as is.

Nosaj has done almost exactly what I was contemplating with for this photo, except I would brighten the gray background a bit to get more contrast with the silhouette. Looks very nice in this simplifying crop.
I like Bob's version a lot too but I would never have thought of it myself:( More complex than I would have been able to "see."

Wow you are all great! I loved the image itself, the bird perfectly still and in silhouette. But when I looked at the image, it was baffling which branches to leave in, threes look good, one was OK too, etc. Thank you all very much for playing with this!!!

Another variant. I opened it in Adobe Camera Raw, upped the exposure and clarity and cropped until I was happy with the composition. Cloning out the thin branch coming in from the center towards the upper right could be an improvement. I was too lazy to do it myself.

Thank you! Yeah that small branch has got to go:) Although in this crop, it's not that bad. And I just noticed that the small branches on the right were cropped earlier. That sure cleans up the shot.
