I originally was not going to post these shots. They were taken last summer just after I got a new 500 mm lens and 1.4x extender. I was mounting the camera and lens on my tripod when my wife said to look at the Steller's Jay that had landed on the fence. I, of course, whipped the camera up and started shooting. Now, at an equivalent 700 mm hand holding is not recommended but this bird instead of flying away started hopping around the perimeter of our yard on the fence. He finally jumped off in a little wooded area outside the yard ...he never took wing. It wasn't until I tried processing the shots that I realized why ...he had a full craw and was still trying to swallow a vole he had caught.
