Pitted against Canon rebels and Nikon 3200/5100 etc is it a looser?
I bought it for the few reasons
1> I inherited few old Minolta lens .
2> I have been using sony DSC ( point and shoot) for longer than a decade.
3> Sony has a huge network in India
4> SLT is a newer technology.
5> Canon 600D and Nikon 3200/5100 has far less features than this.
6> FPS is faster ( though in jpeg)
7> handling( weight, grip, buttons) felt great.
Sony is producing great photo gear at this time.
The Sony Alpha is a fantastic camera for the price. It has a number of features which will not see the light of day at a similar price from the likes of Canon and Nikon for a few years yet. I have just made the transition from to Sony (Alpha 77) after 30 years with Canon.
It seems that Sony is leading the field with real innovations at the moment and is even supplying Nikon with sensors. It may not have the snob factor of Canon or Nikon but you can take satisfaction that you have an excellent camera with many extra features over the other cameras in the same price range and Sony's quality matches and in some areas surpasses the quality of the other two.
You have the added bonus of very reasonable priced lenses from Minolta (although prices are going up a little as other Sony Alpha users are snapping them up) That the Alpha 58 has internal body stabilization means the older Minolta lenses can be used at lower light levels than normal. You made an excellent choice in going for the Alpha 58, now go take some excellent images.

Good to hear that Carl as we keep getting mixed reviews.
