The photography club that I belong to (PSRI) has a 35mm Slide competation. I am thinking of buying a film camera and shoot some slides to enter.

I typed in "Nikon Film Camera" in to the EBay search and over 6000 cameras came up for sale. It looks like there is a lot in "working" condition under a $100.00. Many in the $25-35 range... After reading a couple reviews, I guess I should stay away from EM's and maybe be looking at FE's and FM's ??? My first camera was a Miranda F, so I am not afraid of full manual. Do any of these Nikons use batteries that are no longer available.

What models should I be looking at here ?? Any recommendations ?? Anybody have anything they want to get rid of for the postage ???

What lenses would you use with them?

The Nikon AF film cameras are ones like N6006, N8008, N90, F100, plus the F4/F5/F6 pro models. I have one or two I'd be happy to unload.

One auction site I've recently come across is "shopgoodwill.com" The Goodwill stores across the country post items for auction just like the big auction site, only just donated item. There are a number of film cameras (and I recently saw a Nikon D5100 and a D7100 go) of all brands with some "collectables" also.

Back in the film era I had a Nikon F301 and F401, both autofocus cameras and both very good. The F401 had a pop up flash like the Dslr's today. That is handy sometimes. Never had any problems with those two, can recommend both of them.

Were you in the US? I think those have corresponding US numbers like N6006, though I'd have to look up the specific mapping.

I still have an N6006. You can get them now for next to nothing, and they take wonderful photos. I really liked that camera.

I'll have to go check exactly what I've got, and make sure everything still works. I believe I have a N8008s and N90. They don't work with Nikon's "G" lenses, so I'll keep the F100 since it does work with the G lenses.

No, I was not in the US. They used N2000 and N4004 for those cameras there.

And then, all of a sudden, the F100 was the second best offering with the same name everywhere, confusing everyone. :-)

Most of my film cameras are 30 years old or more, but I have an Nikon N65 that is like new. It uses all of the same lenses that my DSLR's use. You can get one of those for well under a $100 in nearly new condition. Even with the original 28 -80 mm zoom kit lens for about $120. Check B and H Photo's used equipment for a good buy.

If you just want to try them out, I suggest you look at a manual focus body like an FM2 or an FE2. An autofocus body like an F100 will cost a bit more. All three are good choices.

Look in keh.com for a decent selection from a reliable source.
