I love taking pictures. Don't know much about photography or cameras but want to learn. I am trying to decide on a camera which allows more than just point and shoot and easy to use. There is so much information that the more I read the more confused I am. I had thought about the Canon SX50sh or Coolpix P7000. Any thoughts on these two? Are there questions I can ask myself to help determine a new camera?

I know a lot of people who love their SX50. You are right about there being simply too much information. You need to narrow your search. The best way to do this if you do not have a brand or model in mind, is to figure out how much money you want to spend. Then only research cameras that are in or near this range. You can also limit your search by making certain decisions: Do you want to switch lenses or are you content with the zoom that the camera comes with? If you want to change lenses, you should look at a DSLR. If you are ok with a single all purpose lens, then a bridge camera like the SX50 is a good choice.

Your photo belies that you "don't know much." I, personally love it. Captures a special emotion from that old dog.

I agree you have to decide if you want versatility vs. simple and what is the most/best you can do within budget. I love my Canon T4i - light weight, easy to learn, can be bought with reasonably good lenses. Of course, I'd get the T5i.

I'd suggest go to a brick and mortar camera store, handle a bunch of cameras, ask tons of questions and make sure there is a good return policy so, if you find the camera you buy doesn't suit your hand, you have swap options.

Welcome, Tango, and thank you for posting the very sweet image of your golden.

I have the Canon SX50 and love it! You can look at some of my distant wildlife shots by clicking on my user name, and then the list of posted topics. For some beautiful wide-angle landscapes, check out user Lorima. User Dook, from Australia, has some neat variety shots + there are many others - just use the search at top of page for camera name.

Good advice from Selkii to get a feel for the cameras in a store. A camera similar to the SX50, the Nikon P510, felt totally different to me and I didn't care for it at all.

Hope you enjoy this fun, informative forum :)

Great photo. Welcome to the forum. In answer to your question the answer has to start with what do you want to aim at in photography. As stated do you want to progress to changing lenses so you can do macro, wide angle (for landscapes) telephoto for wild life etc, then ask yourself how much you want to spend. For instance if you go down the dslr route you will eventually want to buy more lenses. Once type of photography and spending allowance is sorted the next best thing is to go to a camera shop and try several types and makes you may find one manufacturer has it buttons and dials etc situated in a more natural and comfortable feel than another manufacturers buttons. Sounds like you are after a dslr and there are a few makes to choose from. just make sure what you decide on will allow you to improve and not restrict you to using basic modes only. Canon and Nikon have several models that fit this bill as I am sure has Sony, Sigma etc.

Thanks ebrunner. Actually, I would prefer not changing lens. I also want something more light weight and easy to handle. I guess a trip to a camera store might help. I try to research first to eliminate any sales pressure that might occur.

Thanks Linda. Odd, there is a canon sx50 and a canon 510 which must be new. The 510 is 30x zoom vs the 50. My problem is that I do not know enough about what I really want a camera to do so am totally confused. I want to buy one camera that will do it well, after looking think this can be done for under $500. I do like the zoom feature but question whether I really need 50. Oh well, part of the fun is in the hunt.

The 510 does not have a viewfinder. That becomes a deal breaker for me even though the viewfinder on the SX50 isn't great :)

Hi Tango. Welcome to the hog. In answer to your question: First, decide how much you want to spend on a DSLR. Then, go to your local camera store, whichever it is, and ask to see all the cameras in that price rangeĀ….Hold them, see which one "speaks " to you. Once you get that certain "feel" well, that is the camera for you.
