The gar was naive enough to swim by the gator's mouth. I certainly wasn't going to challenge him for it.

Very cool shot. Have yet to shoot my first gator up close and personal. ;-)

Think about something longer than your 55-200mm so you don't need to get too close. My walk around lens is a 400mm on an APS-C body so "close" is 13 to 15 feet. Just don't get too comfortable when you are close and keep your head on a swivel. My avatar photo was taken at about 13 to 15 feet from that gator, too. I caught a clear shot of a mosquito biting that gator in it's mouth in another shot in that series.

I was visiting a friend of my wife in Naples, FL and she had been on an 'air-boat' excursion and she said the operator had spots where he fed the gators so they saw a lot of them. I'm going to check it out.

One reptile, eating another. Seems like they would have advanced some, over these millions of years.

High on the prey list for big gators are smaller gators. It's a gator eat gator world out there.

I've seen how fast a gator can move, if that's in the wild and that gator wanted you, he'd have you. 13 to 15 feet is being a bit careless.

Yes, it is. I caught one on a rod, and reel one time. They put up a hell of a fight.

That gator had his private fishing hole that he was enjoying and was down a steep bank from where I was standing. If, on the other hand, the park was full of crocodiles it would not be possible to walk around and shoot photos.
