Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR is one of my favorite lens.

Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6... Less expensive, but sharp...Equivalent FOV to a 15-30mm on full frame... You don't need a fast aperture when doing landscapes since the camera is often tripod mounted & wide open , the DOF suffers.

Actually, many lenses can be used for landscapes. Most people associate wide angle lenses with landscape photography though. Since you are shooting with a D300 (crop sensor), you have to take the 1.5x factor into consideration. As for a prime or fixed focal length lens, I use a 20mm Nikkor (older MF lens which works with either my D300 or my D7100) which is equivalent to a 30mm on a full frame.

Samyang 16mm F2 .....manual focus ......For fantastic landscape work, I highly recommend sweep panoramas in the portrait orientation format using a lens of 20-24mm. This is most easily accomplished ( in camera) with a Sony camera - I use the NEX-3.

As Scott mentions above, most would reach for a wide-angle lens for landscape work. HOWEVER...

An important consideration in rendering a landscape is how you would like to portray the perspective. Some very compelling landscape photography depicts distant subjects appearing to be in close proximity to near subjects...a function of a long focal length lens (200mm, 400mm, etc.)

If you'd like your distant subject to appear even farther away, a wide-angle lens will do the trick.

I recall doing some landscape photos where I had to hike BACK several hundred yards and use a telephoto lens to achieve the desired perspective.

This is merely ONE of many ways you create an image to YOUR desires. There's really no end to it!!

People usually say wise angle. However, I was given an Art Wolfe book for Christmas. The photo notes indicates he uses an 70-200 much of the time. The results look like they were easy and simple but I'm betting that far from the case.

Sigma 18 - 35 F 1.8. Simply fantastic for landscapes.

I use a Nikon 55-300 for eighty percent of my landscape shots. Most of my work is in the red rock country of Utah where you can see for miles so the telephoto draws some of the distant formations into the shot.

Depending on the perspective your looking for, focal length could be anything... My two most used for landscapes are the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and the Nikon 17-55 f2.8... These cover the focal lengths I tend to use for landscapes, are both very sharp, and while you don't need 2.8 for typical landscapes I enjoy nightscapes where it comes in very handy

This past spring I traded in my D300S for a D800E. The only regret I have is that I don't have the 18-200 mm lens I so loved and depended on. It was great for landscapes and great for portraits, and it wasn't bad as a telephoto. The D300 is a great camera; go to a camera shop and try the 18-200 mm and see if it doesn't satisfy the needs of many roles.
