One issue that I perceive, assuming I've been informed correctly (I use Windows), is that Aperture imports your photos directly into some sort of database, which means the images are not available if you corrupt/uninstall/kill Aperture in some fashion. The other products listed store the images as files on your hard drive in a universal format. That's a major benefit, in my opinion.

My step son recently upgraded the OS in his Mac, rendering Aperture inoperable. He quickly found out, much to his chagrin, that he had no access to any of his images. He still doesn't have a remedy.

I don't think that is true. All of my tons of files are stored as single JPEG files, easily manipulated, retrieved, or whatever.

That's encouraging!! Just to help my step-son, do you import your images into Aperture? Are you implying you would have access to the JPG files outside Aperture? Windows calls it the Explorer, and I'm not sure what Apple calls it (Finder maybe??), but can you use the tool to locate and view the JPG files?

Thanks for chiming in. I'd really like helping him get his images back. Thanks.

Absolutely Bruce. Not only can I find any photo with finder, but numerous other ways. Even the other PP products I use can access the library such as PSE11 which can not only access any photo but import the complete library. Also, Perfect Photo Suite 8 can easily access any shot on the hard drive.

Thanks much. He's coming for a visit today. I'll talk with him about it.
