I broke my Canon ET-73 this morning. Wow! It's expensive. $30 - $50 at amazon. Should I spend the money, or would I be just as happy with a generic one?

It's fits on the Canon 100mm Macro F2.8L IS

If you follow my reponses here on UHH, you may already know I recommend getting a proper fitting METAL hood and then get a "hoodie" slip over cap for the hood - these can be gotten off ebay if necessary. Leave the hood on the lens at all times for protection - get a larger case if you have to, to accomodate the hood. Do not use a filter for protection unless unusual conditions warrant it .

Do you have a link to the item you are referring to?

I had a lesson in why you recommend having the hood on at all times. It was cloudy this morning, I had no reason to put it on, but thank God I did. I even had my camera on a tripod, but I bumped it with my snowshoe, and down it went into the snow. I have a manfrotto tripod. It is very heavy and sturdy, but down it went.

Look on KEH too. They may be more expensive than the generic, but should be less than new if they have one. It may be hard to tell as brand specific accessories are somewhat hard find on their website.

$30 at KEH, and I have free shipping at amazon.

You've seen the pro/con filter/hood/cap debates before. I use rubber hoods, fold them back and snap on a plastic cap.

I will look for links later today ......If you do get the OEM hood, you can still keep it on 24/7 and use a "hoodie" to cap it.

Rubber hoods are convenient, but do not protect well ....

I am very new to photography (a year now) What do you mean OEM and what do you mean hoodie to cap it? I have never seen this. Sorry to be so uneducated.

I think it's gangsta slang. A hoodie is like a sweater with a hood and cap it means to shoot it. I may be wrong though.

Ok, sorry .....Here- http://www.ebay.com/itm/LensCoat-Hoodie-Small-Black-/360200559224?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53dda05a78#ht_1527wt_1040 - is a link for the hoodie, and OEM is original equipment manufacturer - in this case Canon ! I think this size hoodie is the one that will work, but they go by the largest diameter of the hood you are trying to cap.....
