SB-400. You might wish to check the reviewers, most of whom pan the new SB-300, either directly or via faint praise. Also the market price for the discontinued SB-400 has risen to anywhere from $150 to $225, and rising. (An exception is one site which offers the SB-400 for $90, but they don't have it, and are taking backorders, and do not list a street address or location that I can find.)
As you know, the retail price for the SB-400 was around $120. Quality rules the market. ;-)

The SB-400 has been discontinued. It is not a very effective flash. It's better than the pop-up, but not very powerful. I don't know about the SB-300, but it sounds like it's a step below.

Look on ebay for the SB-600 - a very good flash. It's not worth spending money on something that isn't going to help you.

If you do want an SB-400, send me a PM, and we can work something out.

As already stated, the SB400 has been discontinued, to be replaced by the SB300. From what I can tell from reviews, the 300 is a lesser flash.

I have the 400, and while it does not have the power of the bigger flashes, it does allow you to keep it on the camera at all times without getting in the way, and it does provide for Bounce when shooting horizontal (can be used vertically, but can produce shadows). Works on 2 battaries rather then 4.

It comes down to what type of flash pictures you expect to take. If within a short range, it will meet your needs. If you expect to need power for far away objects....or fancy stuff, then you'll need to consider more powerful units

I do not do professional work any more. The SB-600 is more than adequate for me.

I have both SB-400 and SB-600. The 400 is what is on my camera most of the time; it is advantageous over the built-in because it will clear above a fat lens that the built-in cannot (resulting in a dark semi-circle at the bottom of the image). It is quick to recharge, and the batteries last forever.

The 600 is altogether more serious, heavier, and more capable. In addition to iTTL (the current Nikon method) it can do regular TTL, which is supported by my FA. Also a great unit, just bigger in every way.

I have never used the 400 but was really impressed with the SB300. I wish I had kept mine.
