Stick to my Canon or convert to Nikon?

I have been using Canon for the past two years and I am very satisfied with my gear; however, I cannot help but notice the many flaws that Canon (as a company) has in contrast with Nikon, and it's getting me more and more frustrating as time passes because I don't feel Canon really cares about its customers, below are some of my major takes on Canon:

- Canon's policy seems to be going towards "milking the cow" when it comes to some of its high end bodies, take the 7D for example! I have been desperately waiting for a 7D MK II (or whatever might replace it in the same category) for the past couple of years in vain! I have bought one a year ago and I was not at all satisfied with my purchase although I got it for a very good and competitive price during a promotion, simply because I had tried my friend's D7000 before and immediately noticed the lower dynamic range, smaller color depth, much poorer picture quality and higher noise at lower ISO! it was a shock!!! And just to be fair, I framed the exact same shot on both cameras with the same lens equivalent and the difference was still too obvious!

- Canon is not at all transparent with its future plans and ends up confusing or (in my case) upsetting its customers! I waited so long for the long rumored 5D MKIII, but due to the secrecy and lack of transparency Canon seems to adopt when working on new bodies, I ended up buying the 5D MKII (which is by all means an excellent body) exactly 3 weeks before the official MKIII announcement by Canon!!! I was utterly mad and fuming because for a difference of around $500 at the time I would have been able to buy the much better MK III that I have been waiting for for so long (and I had the means to do so back then) and I was no longer able to sell my newly purchased 5D MKII for a reasonable price as its price drastically dropped in a few days after the MKIII announcement and no one was willing to pay me more than 43% of what I paid 3 weeks earlier for the MKII so I had to stick with it!

- I hate the fact that you cannot use EF-S lenses on EF mount bodies! It's just stupid! Especially when your direct competitor (i.e. Nikon) offers this benefit on their DX and FX lens lineup! What is Canon thinking???!!!

- Nikon offers more lenses than Canon mostly for a cheaper price and with the same optical quality (if not better in some cases). Why does Canon not have an equivalent to Nikon's FX 28-300 or DX 18-300???

- Nikon has the edge in image quality and ISO noise control, it's so obvious that it's annoying! Way too obvious! Why does Canon not care about improving the quality of their sensors? They have excellent optics but the sensor can't match them in excellence! Shame!

- Many of Canon's non "L" lenses have a very cheap feeling to them (even if they are optically good) while Nikon's non ED lenses have a much better feeling and build quality.

- And finally, Nikon seem to give you more of a perfect and well balanced bodies (in terms of specs depending on the category of the camera) in contrast with Canon who seem to give you a certain weakness (or a set of weaknesses) in each of its bodies so you can never have a perfect body!

After all the above, please tell me (aside from the ridiculous amount of money that I've invested in my Canon gear), why should I keep using their products while I have Nikon giving me everything I need? I am really desperate for an answer because every cell in my body is asking me to sell everything even with a great loss and start on a new blank page with a product that I feel is much more worth the money to me!

With all the above being said, I still think that the 5D MKII is a magnificent camera and Canon's lenses are of great optical quality but it's just the way the company conducts itself that bothers me.

Thanks,

Perhaps you should work for Nikon in their sales department :roll:

Nikon shooters can come up with a similar list of issues.
* Where is the D400???
* D800 focus issue
* D600 oil spots on sensors
* What do you mean my AF-D lens won't autofocus on my D5100?
* My lens autofocuses so much slower than my friend's Canon lens
* Why can't I get a pro-level f/4 lens (those just started showing up a couple of years ago)
* I want a 400mm f/5.6 lens!

The two companies and product lines are much more similar than different. Switching will not solve your problems.

Some of your points are valid.
Some of your points are wrong.
Some of your points apply to both companies.
Some of your points actually apply more to Nikon than they do to Canon.
I suggest that you weigh up the issues a bit more rationally before paying the cost of jumping ship.

I've already come to terms that I have way too much invested in L lenses to switch, and I haven't been unhappy with Canon either. I've compared my shots to Nikon equipment and found no difference. I don't know why you would want to use EF-S lenses on a FF body as I don't even use them on a crop body. In comparing my 50D to the newer models I pretty much came to the conclusion that if I were to upgrade it would be to a 5D MK iii. I feel that the newer crop cameras are getting too many pixels crammed into them for quality pics.
Ok ... I veered off topic, but the main idea to my rambling is that Canon and Nikon are pretty equal in the scheme of things and unless you have no investment in either, maybe taking a look at Sony ..... uhhh never mind.

I really don't think Canon doesn't care about it's customers, they didn't get to where they are today by not caring and I'm a Nikon shooter. The gripes you have about Canon can be said about Nikon also, it's just the nature of the beast. Stick with what you have.

I am a Nikon user but could easily be a Canon aficionado if I didn't have my current investment in Nikon glass. Both brands are equally great with individual idiosyncrasies that fuel debate.

Neither one is perfect nor a bad choice.

I am also very happy with Nikon after 30 years and most Canon users are happy with their choice. Competition will keep them both honest.

Because you will be carrying over your lenses from one body to the next, it can be a serious commitment. If I were in your shoes I would really take my time before switching.

I was a Canon and a Nikon film user and since going digital I have only used Nikon. A good friend and pro photographer only uses Canon. My feeling is that it is " 6 of one and a half dozen of the other". Meaning that neither are perfect and neither are bad. If you want to know what the other side has, join it. But I recommend not selling your existing equipment until you are sure switching sides was the best thing for you.

If you can't get absolutely amazing photos from the 7D... well, it's not the camera's fault.

If you were unhappy with the Canon bodies and Canon lenses and were unhappy with the results you are getting then moving to Nikon would be an option. Of course if you were unhappy with the images, the problem might not be the camera. But you say the 5D II is magnificent and Canon lenses are great. So take pictures and enjoy yourself. What the heck are you going on about? You're happy with the gear but you don't like the company because they do things differently than Nikon or they don't do things the way you want them to? You complain about how the company conducts itself, which makes it sound like they are involved in domestic spying or supporting some cause that you find reprehensible. They just makes cameras, which you apparently love. Get over it. :roll:

I have been a Nikon shooter for 56 years back when all they made were rangefinders and I believe their gear is superb and I would not change for anything. The latest, best gear Nikon makes lives in my bag.
HOWEVER...
Canon makes excellent gear and while right now, Nikon has a technology edge if you aren't interested in video, that will change and then Canon will be ahead. Master what you have.
