I recently purchased a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55, and an 55-200 kit lenses. With in days of buying my DSLR, my old computer went to digital heaven.
In order to save my pictures I bought the WU -1a wifi adapter, enabling me to transfer the pictures to my Samsung S4, and then xfer the shots to the cloud.
I notice when I send the pictures to my phone the file size is about 1/10 the size of the original.
This picture was shot at 200 mm and the camera was set in full auto mode. I transferred it to my phone and zoomed in, then did a screen shot (capture).
My question, does the file size reduction reduce the quality of the picture?
My apologies for the length of this explanation/question.
In a quick word, Yes :)
I'll defer to the experts for the detailed, technical response.
The image you posted looks out of focus, so that will be an issue too. Is it cropped significantly?
Thank you Linda.
I zoomed in until the bird filled most of my phones screen. I'm not sure how file size and mega - pixels relate, but zooming/cropping seems to deteriorate the image. The focus was probably off to begin with also since I pre focused and took the shot remotely.
I think I posted this in the wrong section. I think I saw a section called photo analysis or something like that.
From what I could find it seems the Nikon WMU app downsamples the images to fit your device. This results in a smaller image both spatially and digitally. Your images will look fine when viewed at 100% on your device but at larger resolutions and for prints you may have a problem.
In the app under:
settings > image size
You have 2 options to choose from and neither are for a full size image. You will notice however the statement that if an image cannot be resized it will download at the original size.
Perhaps if you lock your photos they will download at full size. Can't hurt to try.
Thank you Jim. I will see what I can do with that info.
I took another look at the app. I found if I download the pictures one at a time, it gives me the option to do at the original size. I dl'd the same picture and cropped it about the same size. I don't, however, see a way to add the picture here. I need a teenager to teach me.
