Hello Everyone,
I want to share a photo I took tonight of the moon. I held the cam in my hands, and this is what I came up with. Settings was set at:
f/11, ISO 200, 1/250 This is the first that I have taken with this lens 55-300. Can anyone give me any pointers regarding settings I should use in order to get some good shots of the moon ?

I would try different f stops, then different shutter speeds. I shot the moon too with my 55-300. I tried using a tripod with VR off and the shots were not too good. I had better luck hand holding, while braced up against something solid. The focusing is the biggest problem. If you have the VR on, you have to wait until it settles down; you can actually see it stop jumping around. Or if the lower your ISO and can use a faster shutter speed, you can manual focus.

Erv is our resident moon shooter here. If he doesn't respond, I would try sending him a PM. He's a very helpful guy.

Here are the basics: use a tripod and an electronic shutter release. turn off VR or IS because it will cause camera shake when on a tripod. auto focus then set your lens to manual. Since the camera is on a tripod set your ISO to the lowest you can to reduce noise, noise will show up in dark areas the most. nikon 200, canon 100. Since your camera is on a tripod you can use a longer shutter speed. Set camera to Aperture Priority and see what you get with an f8 or f11.
If you need to adjust the light, then look at the settings, turn your camera to manual, dial in those settings, then change the shutter speed until you get what you like.
If there happen to be any stars in the viewfinder, try using an f.22 to get a star effect.

I shoot hand held as well...I have the best luck shooting at f6 or so, ISO 200 and a SS no slower than 1/400 and sometimes as fast as 1/800...the faster shutter speed helps compensate for the lack of a tripod (real pain in my mind to set up a tripod for something one can shoot most evenings) and a fast moving subject....
