Preferably one that doesn't cost half the price of the camera itself? I have searched here and on the net but I'm not coming up with much of anything but yet it has a hotshoe on it?

I use a Yongnuo YN560 on my SX50. It just mounts on the hot shoe, but can also be used off camera. It is not TTL but is easy to use. Price is great.

Thank you Dook. I wasn't sure this one was compatible. It's very hard to get information sometimes.

Most Canon compatible flashes will work. I got a Targus model at Target that works nicely & has bounce. Walmart has the Sunpack 3000 that has bounce & swivel. These are both $60 and a good place to start.

I have a Canon 270, nice little flash, works on my G-7, T1i and T4i, also have Sigma flash, test and works well on my T4i, about the same $$ for the two, Sigma appears to have a focus assist light though I have never actually seen it show up it does help focus in the dark, Sigma is a lot less $$ than Canon flash, Bob.
